Pop is a tough father to Augie and the rest of the seven Mohans. The Depression landed him in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington and now he must take a gamble to feed his children.
Against his better judgment, he signs on to the Carolina, an aging fishing trawler. It's an open secret that the captain of the Carolina is up to no good.
When the Carolina disappears off the coast of Vancouver Island, Augie is left to feed his brothers and sisters, and wonder about the fate of his father. The two bodies of Chinese immigrants that wash up on a windward beach provide the first clues that some island residents know more than they will tell.
China Rock provides a look at the hardscrabble lives of young and old during the difficult 1930's. Through the lens of a youngster who yearns to understand the making of his family, the story shows us the making of a man.

China Rock edition by Laura Kelly Robb Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
China Rock is a satisfying easy read novel by Laura Kelly Robb. It contains vivid, convincing characters and paints a realistic view of life and times during the Depression in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Intriguing family dynamic, wonderfully woven Depression Era context and a glimpse into life on the San Juan Islands in the 30s make this a very enjoyable read. Augie and his brothers kept me on my toes as they schemed to avoid Pop's quick temper. I loved meeting the island's many colorful characters, delving into the mystery of the Chinese couple on the beach and following the action to a surprising conclusion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting and likeable especially Augie. There is enough suspense to keep you reading and plenty of family dynamics to keep you thinking. If you have children in middle school or higher, this is a book the whole family can enjoy and share. The author makes you feel the painful choices ordinary people had to make to survive the Great Depression and the power of familial love. Augie is a delightful combination of mischevous boy and budding young adult. I hope this author will bring us more about the Mohan family.
Enjoyable read! I just bought a second copy for a friend as a gift. Keep writing Laura Kelly Robb!
I hope everyone gets the opportunity to read China Rock. Families are so important since we are born into them and live our whole lives around them. This is true even when they are absent, or we are seperated from them. In this novel the author explores the relationships of the characters such an honest way that it beseeches us to look at our own family in a new and searching way. I recommend this book to everyone who has family, or who wants to know what it is like to grow up with siblings. The role of the father is espescially complex and gives a twist to the story that can be heartbreaking at times. A riveting read! Could not put it down! A real page turner!
To me, being Dutch and not a native speaker of English, it was an absolute pleasure to read this book. The author's usage of English appeared natural and versatile to me, with many expressions that surprised me and enhanced my knowledge of English in a self-explanatory way. Besides, it provided me with insight in everyday life in the US in the Thirties with many of its pleasures and hardships, in times Social Security was not or hardly available and people had to rely a great deal on each other. Dialogues between children and teenagers and their parents mirror Ms Kelly's understanding of developing youth spirit and of approaches parents can possibly have in dealing with their children. I can recommend this book to anyone.
First Effort by Ms. Robb and a smashing one at that. A mother, a father, and seven children growing up. Each living a life dictated mostly by the circumstances of the depression. The main characters, four brothers, are so different yet they come from the same parents. They are drawn with such detail they become real persons for the reader. If there is a criticism it is that the mother of the family is portrayed as so passive. She just lets things happen around her. But, the story is not about her. It is about the strong willed father; how his actions and attitudes shape the lives of his children. Ms. Robb put a lot of effort into her research. Life in this Washington State town in the 1930's comes alive on the pages. The teenage boys display ingeniousness in their efforts to find work; each trying to contribute a little money to the family purse. I certainly hope we hear more from Ms. Robb.
